The COLDEST air since 1986 (yes, you read that right) is headed right here to North Georgia and it will be here in just a matter of days. But before we get that, we are talking more accumulating snow for the mountains and for the entire Metro Atlanta area.

We will see rain move through Sunday night, but as the sun goes down, the temps will as well. When the temps fall, rain will transition to snow. Accumulations amounts stand as this. We could see trace to 1 in most spots but as we head into Gilmer, Fannin, Union, and Towns Counties we could see 2-3", the same in Dade and Walker.

After the snow falls, we will see the temps will still TUMBLE. Start off in the Northwest Georgia Mountains we are looking at lows Tuesday morning as low as 2, only 2, two. The Northeast GA Mountains, the Tuesday morning low will be around zero. In metro Atlanta, we are talking lows near 9. Then, factor winds 23-30mph with 45 mph gusts. Its going to down right frigid.

Of course, a lot of this will change as it approaches. We are confident on the cold air but the snow totals, they are just starters because they just came into range. We will have updates tomorrow!

A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for parts of north Georgia through 7 AM tomorrow. Snow showers are likely with accumulations varying from a dusting to 1". Black ice is also a major concern as the wet roadways may freeze over to cause slippery conditions. If you have to go out tomorrow, wait until the sun comes up so you can somewhat see the ice.

Also tonight, lows will be well below average, in the 20s and teens. The wind will also be in full force in the mountains. That is prompting a rare WIND CHILL ADVISORY for Dade, Walker, Chattooga, Gordon, Murray, Fannin, Gilmer, Pickens, Dawson, Lumpkin, Union, Towns, and White Counties for wind chills between 10 and -5 degrees. In terms of wind, we will see sustained winds between 20-25 mph and wind gusts between 35-40 mph. Beware of falling trees and power lines as you could be without power for several hours an with temps in the teens and single digits, you don't want to be in that situation.

Per the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a rain snow mix in LIKELY now in the north metro Atlanta area as we head into Sunday evening. It all starts out Sunday with a 70% Chance of Rain for the entire area but, as the sun goes down, the cold air returns. The rain will begin to transition to snow. It will turn to all snow in the mountains and we be ice in the north metro. It is still too early to pin point exact accumulation amounts if there is any as the ground is too warm at this point in time, but it may not be after these next few days.

Rain
Above is the radar view as of 7:55 PM. Rain will be lingering around through Sunday. In some spots 2-3" or rain is possible mainly west of Atlanta. Some embedded heavy rain will move through the area later tonight. Nothing severe is expected.

Wintry Weather
I am in pretty good agreement with the National Weather Service on this forecast. Their will be some wrap around moisture with this low pressure system that will provide about a 20% Chance of a Rain/Snow/Ice Mix in the areas in pink above. There is a chance of some slippery roads as well. Any snow falling will not provide any accumulation at all because their won't be enough moisture and the grounds are way too warm. That is still subject to change. We will have more updates as we get closer.

Saturday in the middle of the day, the rain will begin across north Georgia and will last through early Sunday. It is all Gulf Moisture that will spread north. The main concentration of the rain will move through the area on Saturday night. Embedded thunderstorms are possible in this low pressure system No severe weather or tornadoes are expected at all will this. A Flood Watch has been issued from 1 PM Saturday to 1 PM Sunday for the areas below in the Flood Watch picture.

A Flood Watch is in effect for the areas in green from 1 PM Saturday to 1 PM Sunday.
As the low pressure system  moves out, we will see some rap around moisture move in to north Georgia. We will have a brief period of seeing some flurries where the cold and the moisture meet. That area will move through the area east to west. No accumulations are expected at this time,

Today and Tonight
We are still seeing a few of the flurries out there across the metro Atlanta area and the North Georgia mountains. They are being confined to the west and it will stay that way as they will taper off through the day. We did see some brief accumulation near Kennesaw earlier. That has since melted. A freeze warning goes into effect tonight at midnight running to 9 AM Monday. The Freeze Watch/Warming Program started back up on March 1st. Otherwise, lows in the mid to upper 20s!

Next Rain Maker...possibly Snow Maker...
As of right now, we are looking at a rain maker sweeping through the area Tuesday sometime. Their is still a lot of uncertainty with the timing. But, timing is key to this forecast. Depending on the time the system moves through, it could change our chance of snow dramatically  Right now, the possibility of winter weather is Tuesday Night into Wednesday Morning. Some, not all models are looking at changing the rain over to snow around 10 PM Tuesday Night for the mountain counties. Some light snow accumulations are possible north of a line from Rome to Canton to Homer.
